7 steps to being happier at work

Become the happiest teacher you know in seven simple steps…

1)  Set Limits

You can’t do everything. Nor can you manufacture time. If there are things that can’t be done in a normal working day, raise this to your manager. You are only human!

2) Learn to say no

Tell people firmly and politely that you won’t have time or be able to do something at work. This could be your head of department, or it could even be your class. Both of them will respect you for telling the truth.

3) Pens down, emails off please

We all need breaks. From computer screens, from marking, from reading children’s handwriting. Try not to bring work home, try to have a lunch break… anything to give yourself a break.

4) Share the load

Getting involved with the growing number of teachers using Twitter for support and advice is also a simple and free way of discovering that you’re not alone. Often you don’t need advice, just someone to listen to you.

5) Keep away from negativity

Certain people love to have a good old moan. Sometimes we need to let off steam but don’t surround yourself with the perpetual moaners in the staffroom; they will only bring you down.

6) Love making lists

Sort out your priorities. Make a list of the things that you have to do and this relieves worrying about them! If you have to tackle a beast – carve it into bite-sized hors d’oeuvres!

7) Know your worth

Do you keep your student or parent thank you cards? Display these cards around your desk to remind yourself of your worth – even on the hardest days!

And if none of these work – it’s time to get a new job!
