Former Tesco boss calls for new free schools to be selective

Sir Terry Leahy has said that he would be interested in setting up a free school, but only if it could be a grammar.

What do you think about the future of free schools? Should creationists be allowed to run them and should they be selective? And are they under enough scrutiny? Share your views with us!

Sir Terry said that grammars were crucial for children like him who grow up in a home with no books, so any free school he helped to run would have to be selective, The Mail reports.

New research shows that regions which still have grammar schools are significantly more likely to send sixth-formers to elite universities than areas that went comprehensive – but there are only 164 remaining grammar schools in England. Sir Terry said: “If you look at these great schools, they were usually founded by somebody who had made a few bob a few hundred years ago.”
