As well as giving frank answers to issues at the heart of education, the Education Secretary revealed his ‘guilty pleasure’ and the girl he first kissed!
Working with BBC newsreader Fiona Bruce, twelve School Reporters travelled to the DfE to grill Michael Gove about teachers’ pay, his ideas for reform of the education system and who his first kiss was with. He even posed for a ‘selfie’!
The Education Secretary admitted that teachers aren’t paid enough: “Teachers should definitely be paid more than they are at the moment,” he said, adding that a lot is demanded of teachers because more was required of students entering the modern-day workplace, the BBC reports.
Mr Gove also said that comprehensive schools are in many cases better than their private counterparts. Other questions from the 12 pupils included lengthening the school day, changing exam grade boundaries, league tables and discipline.
In a question and answer session at the end of the interview, the young reporters cajoled Mr Gove – himself a former journalist with The Times – into revealing some very personal secrets:
- his worst childhood memory was acne
- hit TV series Game of Thrones is his guilty pleasure
- his first kiss was with a girl called Kay from St. Margaret’s School for Girls in Aberdeen. “Kay, if you’re watching, I hope you’ve recovered,” he said
- the Shakespeare character he identifies most with is Horatio from the play Hamlet – the only major character to survive at the end of the tragedy.
Do you think that the Education Secretary’s admission that teachers deserve more pay will result in a pay rise for you, or was it just a throwaway line?
