Welcome to 2016 – The year of the monkey!
The New Year is an exciting time until the 4th, term starts, we all have to go back to work and reality hits. The cold and miserable weather, early morning alarms and the distant memories of Christmas can make February half term seem very far away. In fact January 26th has been officially declared the most depressing day of the year!!
So forgetting the empty bank accounts, the planning not done and the seemingly endless bouts of flu; we’ve compiled a list of 5 suggestions for New Year’s resolutions to beat off those January blues and start 2016 off right!
1. Set realistic goals
Many people set unrealistic New Year’s resolutions only to fail at the first hurdle which can be demotivating and depressing. Set yourself realistic personal and professional goals with achievable time frames and make sure to reward yourself when you achieve!
2. Work-life balance
It’s easy to preach about achieving balance and the reality isn’t always as easy but do remember that your health and happiness is a priority. Tip: Aim to leave school before 5pm at least once a week or try to not take any marking home with you over the weekend.
3. Stay creative
In this world of mounting paperwork, form filling and bureaucracy, try and keep the creative spark in your teaching. This creativity is what makes learning memorable and can be lost in the stress of it all. Keep being creative for your own sanity and your students!
4. Keep positive
Being a teacher is one of the most stressful and undervalued professions, with ever-changing goal posts and more demands than ever, lots of teachers are struggling to cope with the pressure. For your health and mental health try and keep positive this year. Don’t stress the small stuff and remember you are only human. Bring on spring!
5. Believe in yourself
With demanding children, regular observations and OFSTED around every corner, your ability as teacher is continually being judged. Whether you are an NQT, class teacher or in a leadership position this level of scrutiny can be extremely stressful. At the most stressful times you must remember why you joined the profession, take a deep breath and hold your head up high. At the end of the day you can only do your best, so believe in yourself and your ability!
