Overexposure to cyber-world harming children’s development

Baroness Greenfield, professor of pharmacology at Oxford University, has warned that children’s brains are failing to develop properly because of over exposure to screen-based technology and social networking sites. 

The leading academic said that young people are struggling to formulate basic social skills and emotional reactions because of a lack of human contact, citing figures showing that over 50% of 13 to 17 year-olds now spend more than 30 hours a week on computers, e-readers, mobile phones and computers, The Telegraph reports. She also warned that an addiction to social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter  may result in children developing poor self control, short attention spans and little empathy, and that repeated exposure may leave some users with an ‘identity crisis’.

Over-exposure to technology is also being blamed for damaging children’s ability to concentrate in the classroom, according to a new survey of parents and teachers. While 91% of teachers say children’s attention spans are shorter than ever before, parents report that their children are more interested in screen-based activities like watching television and playing computer games than reading or enjoying a bedtime story.
